Maurice J Gilbert, Jr. a.k.a "Gil"
Maurice J Gilbert Jr. of Greenback, Tennessee, formerly of Huntersville, N.C. and long time
resident of Lake Huntington New York died on Sunday, February 13, 2022 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
He was 92 years of age.
The son of the late Rachel and Maurice J Gilbert Senior, he was born on August 28, 1929 in Stony
Point, New York. He attended school in Stony Point until the 11th grade when he enlisted into the
United States Marine Corps. Once enlisted, Maurice attended basic training at Parris Island in SC
completed his M.O.S. school which eventually led him to the Korean War. While serving in the
Korean War, he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and after 10 years of service, he received an
honorable discharge with numerous medals and commendations.
Following his military career, Maurice drove Shortline bus in NYC, where he eventually met his wife
Loretta. Maurice married Loretta in March of 1962. After starting a family, the Gilberts relocated to
Lake Huntington, NY where they ran a successful restaurant & bar named Gilbert's Inn for many
years. Aside from being business owners, Maurice also owned a trucking business, was Highway
Superintendent for the Town of Cochecton and most recently owned a large lawn mowing business
in Huntersville, NC.
Maurice is predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Loretta, who passed away on February 16, 2005.
Survivors include their five children: Michael Gilbert and his wife Sally of Huntersville North
Carolina, Patricia Schmidt and her husband Stephan of Greenback, Tennessee, Diane Marston and
her husband Chris of Hankins New York, Christopher Gilbert and his wife Donna of Orlando, Florida
and Andrea Gilbert-Nanni of Orange City, Florida; 13 grand children: Shannon Danko and Morgan
Burt; Bryan, Michael and Erika Schmidt; Vanessa Burleson, Katrina Couch, Joseph Meyer and
Stephanie Cook; Kristen Carimi & Christopher Gilbert; Alexandra & Anthony Nanni; 12 great
grandchildren: Gabrielle and Mason Burleson, Aaliyah Nanni-Williams, Beckham Carimi, Von Burt,
Madilyn Cook, Isabelle Couch, Mila Carimi, Colton Couch, Bailey Cook, Veda Burt & Memphis Orr.
His sister Evelyn Bayless of Elizabethtown, New York and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother Robert Gilbert and sisters Dorothy Dunham & Gloria Dunham.
Services will be held at Stewart Murphy Funeral Home 5068 State Route 52 Jeffersonville New York on Sunday
February 20th, 2022 with viewing hours from 10:30am-12 pm. Friends are then invited to participate in a
graveside service at 1 pm at St. Francis Cemetery in Narrowsburg, NY.
