Herbert Bauernfeind

    Herbert F. Bauernfeind, farmer and lifelong resident of the Beechwoods, Callicoon, died Monday, November 21, 2022 at the age of 93.  Herb was born in Liberty, son of John Herbert and Wilhelmine Huebsch Bauernfeind.  He was married to Florrine Bauernfeind.
      Herb completed one year at Cornell University, took over his father's poultry farm in 1949 and later switched to dairy.  He continued to modernize the farm, adding to both the herd and the buildings.  He excelled in dairy herd improvement.  Herb was also very active in the community, serving on many church boards, cemetery boards and school boards, garnering multiple awards.  Of particular note are Sullivan County B.O.C.E.S., Grace Church, Callicoon Thrift Shop and Callicoon I.O.U. all of which he kept up with until age 85.  He was instrumental in the formation of the Upper Delaware Ambulance Corps.  He really loved being with people and always wanted to be in the middle of everything.  He loved numbers and driving.
      Herb is survived by three children:  Marie Peek and husband Jim Peek of Bath, NY; Roy Bauernfeind and wife Nancy of Myrtle Beach, SC; and Mark Bauernfeind and wife Patricia of Milanville, PA; also two grandchildren:  Andrew Peek, and Heather Slane and husband Dan; also brother-in-law Raj Bery; sisters-in-law Magoly Bauernfeind and Judy Bauernfeind; and several nieces and nephews.
      Herb was predeceased by his wife Florrine, their son Ivan, grandson Robert Peek, sister Marjorie Bery, brothers Glenn and Ross Bauernfeind, brother-in-law John Bauernfeind and his wife Sondra.
      Calling hours are Monday, November 28, 2022 at Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, 34 Upper Main Street, Callicoon from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Grace Church, 9284 Route 97, Callicoon.  Burial to follow in the Bauernfeind Cemetery, Beechwoods, Callicoon.
