"Harriet "Betsy" Bianchi Bulger, 81, a life-long resident of Eastchester NY, passed away Dec 16 at her daughter Melissa Parent's home in Youngsville, NY.
She is survived by her husband George Bulger of Eastchester, her daughter Melissa, her son Matthew Bulger of Portland OR, and her step-daughters Kim Bulger (Brian Hemedinger) of Los Angeles CA, Jennifer Mitchell (Scott) of Burlington VT, and Allyson Chalmers of Yorktown NY. She also leaves behind her adored grandchildren Tyler, Katie, James, Peter, Samantha, Phoenix and Jade, and her beloved former son-in-law Rick Parent, and his family.
A retired elementary school teacher from the Tuckahoe district, she was delighted to reconnect with her former students on social media, and they continue to speak fondly of her creativity, her emotional support, and the joy in her classrooms.
However, Betsy will be remembered best for her outrageous selfishness.
A lover of the intricacies of the English language (as attested to by her weekly completion of the Sunday NY Times Crossword puzzle in ink, as well as her educations at Brown and Fordham), she insisted that "selfish" was the only word that applied whenever she did something to improve the lives of those she loved, because it made HER happy to see those around her happy. Her generosity was legendary, and her desire to help, unparalleled. Coupled with her quick wit, and the forthrightness she inherited in equal measure from each of her parents, Angelo and Harriet Bianchi, her legacy will no doubt include having created a vast network of equally selfish friends and family, who will continue to support one another with love and laughter long into the future.
A celebration of her life will be held in Eastchester once the weather allows for safe travels and outdoor gatherings - details to be announced. In the meantime, those who would like to are encouraged to donate to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, in her honor. Or adopt a stray kitty - she'd like that!"
