Bernard Baker Obituary

Bernard Roy Baker, fondly known as Roy, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2021 at the age of 86 after a short illness.  He was a 42-year resident of Long Eddy, NY.

Roy was born on June 6, 1935 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  Before moving to the United States, Roy was a dairy farmer, tending to a menagerie of animals, as well as owned and operated a pet shop.  In the mid-1970s, Roy met and fell in love with Irene Ruth Baker while visiting the Adirondacks.  Before settling in Long Eddy in 1979, Roy and Irene lived in Cookshire, Quebec, Canada and Indiana.

Roy was a Jack of All Trades with a vibrant, entrepreneurial spirit.  He owned and operated a model train business, enjoyed woodworking producing lawn ornaments, created signage for companies and vehicles and refinished furniture.  Roy also maintained the heating and cooling systems for many years at the former Community General Hospital in Harris and Callicoon, NY.

Roy enjoyed the simple things in life; his family, traveling to admire lighthouses all along the Eastern Seaboard, especially to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and model train shows.  He also appreciated the wildlife of the Catskills and enjoyed photographing nature and old trains. He particularly enjoyed going out on photography adventures with Son Andrew, his Wife, and Daughter In Law Valerie.  In the evening, you could bet Roy was watching two of his favorite shows - Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Family traditions were also important to Roy.  Every Christmas, Roy made his shortbread cookies with his Mom, which he then baked with his own children.  Even now, his daughter, Cheryl, continues the family tradition with her children.  He would never turn down a good burger or a piece of Pineapple Upside Down cake, especially on his birthday.  It was his favorite!

Roy is survived by his loving wife, Irene; sons Andrew Walton Baker (Valerie) of Long Eddy, Bryan Keith Baker (Yvonne) of Binghamton, NY and daughter Cheryl Lynn Rodriguez (David) of Hankins, NY.  Grandchildren Mackenzie Baker and Shayla, Jayden, Damien and Mason Rodriguez, Madelynn and Helena, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, Percy and Lucy Baker; a son, David Edward Baker and his brother, Ronald Baker.

Services will be private at the discretion of his family.  Donations, in memory of Roy, may be made to Catskill Animal Rescue, 263 Old Monticello Road, Liberty, NY 12734.
