Mary Schmieder

Mary T. Schmieder, 95, died peacefully on October 28, 2018 with her loving children by her side and moments after hearing from all of her nine devoted grandchildren. Mary was born in July 1923 in Switzerland to Ignatz and Josephine. The family immigrated to the United States in 1926. Mary had a deep connection to her Swiss family and her country of birth. Mary grew up with her three sisters, Bertha, Anne, and Josephine in Valley Stream, New York. In 1944, Mary married her high school sweetheart, George Schmieder and had three children: Christine, Deborah, and George. After the war they lived in London and upon their return to the United States, they settled in Seaford, NY, where Mary made a lovely home for her family. Her home was always open to her extended family and friends. Sunday dinner at the Schmieder's was a standard family tradition. In addition to being a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, she worked as a medical office manager for 20 years. For over sixty years, Mary would spend the summer season at the Schmieder family home in Obernburg , NY with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. There she was known as “Gram” to all, as her door and heart were always open to visitors. Mary was happiest cooking and spending time with family and friends. She had an abundance of energy and her love for life burned bright. After George's death in 1985, Mary moved to Florida to be with her sisters and cousins. For the last 30 years, Mary enjoyed a wonderful life in Florida enhanced by the devotion and care of her loving cousin and best friend, Rene. They traveled extensively together and her international travels continued into her ninety's . Mary was preceeded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, and sisters/brothers-in-law. She is survived by her children, Christine Speicher and her husband Joe Speicher, Deb Schmieder and her husband Rob Mencher, and Dr. George Schmieder and his wife Dr. Mary Beth Schmieder. Mary was also blessed with nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mary was always at her best when surrounded by grandchildren and great grandchildren. She taught us the importance of an extended family and that it is not defined solely by our genes but is built and maintained through love. Her legacy of unconditional love, faith in God and dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and devotion to her family will live on through all the lives she has touched. The funeral mass will be at St. Mary’s Church in Obernburg, NY at 12 noon on Nov. 10, 2018.Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemeterty Obernburg. In lieu of Flowers, memorial donations in the name of Mary T.
